You will be surprised to know that the first auction is supposed to have taken place in 500 B.C. Since then the world of auctions had developed and expanded, particularly with internet auctions. The question is, what started the revolution and how has it changed over time? Well you won’t be surprised with the fact that online auctions began with eBay. This type of auction allows sellers to add the products they would like to get rid of and then buyers can bid on them and the best price wins. In fact eBay was started purely for people who wanted to buy and sell computers and related products and only grew over time. Due to the success of eBay a number of other competing companies started and in fact were very successful, some of them are still around now and others have gone by the wayside. Whatever has happened to them now many made a lot of money this is mainly due to the fact that everyone is looking for a bargain. Since the beginning of auctions they have been seen as a way to pick up a product below market value which is what draws people to them still today. At the same time as eBay was cutting its teeth in the online auction business the first Reverse Auction was launched by FreeMarkets. However they charged very high fees to use their software which made it an unappealing way of buying products. Then in the early 2000s we saw the development of low cost software that allowed people to set up their online reverse auctions. This was picked up by many companies who used big promotions to give away their product for literally pennies. You will still find now that Reverse Auctions are used as promotions and competitions which haved proved very effective. Then in 2005 we saw the launch of Swoopo. This brought Penny auctions into the equation. The basic idea of the site is that an auction has a time limit and each time you bid the price goes up by a fixed amount. When you reach the deadline, if a bid is placed the time is extended and bidding continues. This leads to quite an exciting finish and can cause a frenzy at the end. Although this is a type of auction it also has an element of competition which keeps coming back. Due to its success Swoopo launched in the US during 2008. One of the things that you can definitely say about online auctions is that they are growing and developing all the time. Just search for online auctions and you get over 25 million results which shows just what there is available. The best thing about having all of this competition is that now the power is in the hands of the buyer, they can browse the sites, find the best terms, cheapest price and most fun competitions. All of the different types of auctions have different benefits and should be aimed at different people. It is probably a safe bet that the online auction business will develop and grow even more over the next few years giving people more choices and options. As a relatively new industry it is one that still has room for new ideas and new competitors and yet more buying opportunities.
